The City of Richmond is home to the State Capitol of the Commonwealth of Virginia, VCU Rams, U of R Spiders and VUU Panthers. The city is 62.5 square miles that is divided by the James River with a population of over 200,000 citizens and the workforce of the federal government, state government and the private sector.
The area offers sporting events, major music concerts, the arts, several museums and local breweries. Many annual events are held in the area including the Easter on Parade, Broad Appetite, Richmond Jazz Festival, Second Street Festival and the Annual Richmond Folk Festival.
The mission of the Richmond City Health District (RCHD) is to protect, preserve and promote optimum health care for the community through excellence in public health.
The Environmental Health Staff includes 10 Environmental Health Specialists Seniors, 1 Manager, and 2 Administrative Support Staff. Programs include inspection of food establishments, temporary events, tourist establishments (hotel and motel, and bed and breakfast facilities), 2 local marinas, summer lunch feeding sites and local swimming pools. There is also 1 dairy plant which is overseen by the District. Other programs include investigation of potential food borne related outbreaks, rabies prevention, complaint investigations, and providing information and education regarding other environmental risks to health. The District also conducts food education to workers and managers every other month.
Food staff regularly inspects:
- Over 1100 permitted Food Establishments (such as restaurants, schools, daycare facilities, nursing homes, mobile food trucks, etc.) which are inspected at least twice annually.
- 50 Tourist Establishments (hotel, motel, or bed and breakfast) which are inspected yearly.
- Over 26 outdoor swimming pools are inspected during the season.
- Over 130 Summer Lunch feeding sites are inspected yearly.
