Introduction

An unscheduled routine inspection was conducted to assess compliance with the Community Care and Assisted Living Act (CCALA), the Child Care Licensing Regulations (CCLR) and Director of Licensing Standards of Practice (DoLSoP). All care categories were inspected for compliance.

Contraventions

Current Inspection - Items reviewed comply with the Act, regulations & standards of practice except for those noted on supplementary pages.

Observed Violations
PHYSICAL FACILITY, EQUIPMENT AND FURNISHINGS: 11010 - CCLR s.13(1) - A licensee must ensure that a healthy and safe environment is provided at all times while children are under the supervision of employees.
Observation: Licensing observed a shelf in one of the play rooms that is not secured to the wall. Potential to fall on a child and injure them.
Corrective Action(s): The Licensee said that they will anchor the shelf to the wall.

PHYSICAL FACILITY, EQUIPMENT AND FURNISHINGS: 11200 - CCLR s.17 - A licensee must ensure that children do not have access to any object or substance that may be hazardous to the health or safety of a child.
Observation: Licensing observed a diaper rash cream in an unlocked bath room cupboard. The cupboard is accessible to children in care.
Corrective Action(s): The Licensee said that they would move the ointment jar so that it is inaccessible to the children.

MEDICATION: 16020 - CCLR s.53(1)(b) - If a licensee has agreed with a parent to give a child any medication prescribed by a medical practitioner or provided by the parent, the licensee and his or her employees must ensure that the medication is (b) readily accessible to employees.
Observation: Licensing was informed, by the Licensee, that a child's epi-pen had expired and a new one has not been provided. Licensing discussed the importance of ensuring that a child's medication is readily available in the event the child required it.
Corrective Action(s): The Licensee said that they would make sure that they obtain the medication from the parent.

Summary of Inspection
At the routine inspection conducted today April 9, 2024 there were five children, and the Licensee present.
At this inspection the above noted contraventions were identified. The Licensee is required to correct all identified non-compliances by the dates indicated above in the violations section.
A written response is to be provided to Licensing on April 12, 2024 for Licensing to review that appropriate corrective action has been taken to address all identified noncompliance. As part of this Routine Inspection a Facility Risk Assessment Tool is completed.
The following discussions were had:
- Medication form
The contents of the inspection report and risk assessment were reviewed with the Licensee at the time of the inspection. This report was written off site. A copy of this report and the risk assessment were emailed to the facility.
